ARTIST OF THE MONTH:

KRISTY VAN DER WECK

Tell us something about your creative Journey from the idea to be an artist to the result, being an artist 🙂

As a child, I dreamed of working in art but I took a different turn during my younger years. After not being involved in art for a very long time, I started drawing again after a burnout. I started by drawing some zentangles, flowers and later some portraits.

After drawing a lot of faces, I got a bit bored with that. The actual copying didn’t feel like a creative liberation to me. So I started experimenting with abstract. In the meantime, I started selling paintings through Auctions and Social Media. I noticed that people started to follow me om Social Media and that actually made me continue to draw and paint.

What was the most exciting part of your work with the box and what was the biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge for me was that I could only use 3 colors. I love a lot of color. I also found it difficult not to go too far into the details and to film the process properly.

Where do you find ideas for your art process?

I really enjoy looking at other artists on Instagram. I notice that it always makes me want to create something myself. Especially in the beginning of my drawing career, I watched a lot of vlogs on Youtube.

Furthermore, I always like to see what happens, I never have an idea in my head about what I’m going to draw. I really like it that it’s always a surpirse

Special question for the box: how would you describe your style?

Abstract with geometric shapes? I also sometimes hear that my work resembles graffiti.

How often do you make art and what does it mean to you?

I draw or paint every day. For me, drawing or painting is similar to breathing. It relaxes me and allows me to connect with myself.

What are your plans for the future?

Make more art. I don’t have other plans for my art career yet. I really enjoy seeing what comes my way. I’m not a person who lives in the future, I think it’s much more important that I have fun with where I am now.

Tell us, what a day in your life looks like, if you’re not making art together?

During the day I work in administration and outside of work I am the mother of a 7-year-old daughter. I’m very busy with that so I paint every free hour I have.

Quick Tips by Kristy

1. Harmonize colors

To make colors harmonize with each other, it is best to mix them together. By mixing them together, they are connected to each other. As a result, the pure colour is always in harmony. It also gives you a much more extensive palette.

2. How to start

Always start with light colors. This allows you to work in layers and you can still correct a lot in the second layer. I always find working with layers very important in my works. That gives a dimension to your work.

3. Don’t draw from memory.

This is especially if you want to draw something. We tend to take a quick look at what we want to draw and then look at the paper. As a result, you start drawing from memory. While drawing, look at the object, that’s where your focus is.

4. Don’t set the bar too high

When I started drawing, I immediately wanted to make the perfect drawing. However, this takes time. It’s very important to experiment and enjoy what you do. In addition, your hand needs time to build certain muscles. And finally, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes don’t exist in the creative process, have faith in the proces.
